Solid pewter Lord of the Rings chess set. Dimensions:  2.5"- 5" tall (pieces).This set was designed and created by Graeme Anthony and yes It is supposed to have 7 orc pawns and 1 gollom pawn on the dark side.The configuration of this set was worked out back in 1973 and the characters chosen were taken from all of Tolkiens books , hence it was called "The War of the Rings" and not "The Lord of the Rings".The reason I used Ents and Smaug as the Knights was because if you study the make up of chess sets before Lord Staunton standardized them you will notice that very early sets had Horses and Elephants and other animals as knights.I just followed suite.

Board not included but can be purchased from Royal Selangor or other boards to suite may be purchased from any good games shop.

After 18 months carving, pre molding and molding, I have finally finished this new chess set.The set comprises a Good King (elf) and a bad King (goblin), a good queen (elf queen) and a bad Queen ( spider), 2 good bishops , 2 bad bishops (goblin witch doctors) , 2 good knights ( eagles with rider) , 2 bad Knights ( the dragon) , 2 good castles and 2 bad castles ( The shadow mountains with a very small dragon at the base.

This set is cast in pewter and the light side is highly polished and antiqued and the dark side is florentine bronze plated

the first edition of this set will be of 100 sets , each numbered and supplied with its own ownership papers.

The set is carefully packed in a plain organic brown heavy duty cardboard box, to please my green friends and  personally signed and numbered by  Graeme Anthony.

Great detail and very nicely proportioned ( all great chess sets follow Lord Stauntons lead and have the pieces decending in height from the King to the pawn) This set replaced our Medieval set of a few years ago. King is 9.5 cm high and the pawns are 5.5cm high.

Steel and glass chess board with the flamming eye of Sauron glowing from beneath the glass surface of the board.

This board is made by Gordon Lee in Scotland and he can install any photo you like as a beneath scene.He likes the eye as a background but he tells me the favourite so far is a map of Middle Earth.The board is totally water proof so you can play your shotglass set  (any set for that matter) on it. It weighs close to 12.5 kgs and is 59cm square with a playing area of 47cm square. I have one in my studio and it is magnificent.

The pieces are authentic costumes for the period and as per the Royal family, the queen is quite plain to say the least.

The first edition of this set, made back in the late seventies, had only 50 sets in the edition and changes hand for around $9000. The last one sold on Ebay went for around that price.

AS FROM 10/12/09 THIS SET CEASED PRODUCTION. THERE WILL BE NO MORE SETS MADE FROM THIS DATE ONWARDS.

This was the first "Rings" set I carved, way back in about 1973/74. It is now in its 32 version. The first  to the 10th editions were of 50 sets only and actually looked nothing like these pieces.The first to the tenth editions are as scarce as hens teeth . If you have one and want to sell it , they are worth about $8000 plus. This is how much it would cost to replace them if they were stolen or damaged.
